The good folk at Book’d Out and Confessions from Romaholics have initiated a very cool idea for this Australia Day. In a nutshell, Australian book bloggers (and authors, booksellers and publishers) sign up to be part of a blog hop – all with the intentions of drawing attention to Australian authors, new and old. We are also encouraged to host a giveaway as well – a book from an Australian author.
To this end, I have chosen a hardcover copy of ‘Sarah Thornhill’ by Kate Grenville.
To be in the running to win this excellent book, all you have to do is leave a comment below and tell us who your favourite author is. You can also leave a comment on our Facebook page or send us your answer on Twitter @areadersheaven
When The Secret River – a novel about frontier violence in early Australia – appeared in 2005, it became an immediate best-seller. It also caused controversy for its frank depiction of Australia’s past. The follow-up novel, The Lieutenant, continued Grenville’s exploration of first contact between white and black – in sunlight rather than shadow this time. Now Sarah Thornhill extends the story into the next generation.
Sarah is born in 1816, her father an ex-convict who’s made good in the new colony of Australia. Three hundred acres, a fine stone house, the money rolling in – William Thornhill is a man who’s re-invented himself. As he tells his daughter, he never looks back, and Sarah grows up learning not to ask about the past.
Her stepmother calls her wilful, but handsome Jack Langland loves Sarah and she loves him. Me and Jack, she thinks, what could go wrong?
But there’s a secret in the Thornhill family. It comes out, as secrets will, and draws everything into its tangles. It casts a long chill shadow over life in the Hawkesbury valley.
That secret propels Sarah backwards, into the darkness of her family’s past. And it propels her forwards, into a future very different from the one she’d imagined for herself. She travels across the ocean to the wild coasts of New Zealand, and among the strangers of that other place she sees the way things truly are.
Sarah Thornhill is set in the past, but it’s as much about today as about yesterday. It’s about the dark legacies hidden in families, about love and unlooked-for happiness, and about keeping stories alive.
Along with The Secret River and The Lieutenant, this novel forms the third book in Kate Grenville’s “Colonial Trilogy”. The Lieutenant tells the story of the first generation of Europeans in Australia, when conversation between black and white was still possible. The Secret River is about the next generation, when that conversation was closed down by violence. Sarah Thornhill is about the third generation, the ones who have to deal with what the past has created, and have the responsibility to tell its story.
My favourite australian author would have to be Tansy Rayner Roberts. I love how her books seem almost like historical fiction – yet the fantasy reassures you that we’re all safe from what happens within her novels!
A great choice indeed – was glad to see her participating in the blog hop as well.
I really enjoy Kate Morton’s writing – The Distant Hours is my fave by her. Great giveaway, my giveaway is here: http://daystarz.wordpress.com/2013/01/25/australia-day-book-giveaway-blog-hop/
Just finished reading “The Secret Keeper” and was left absolutely amazed. Love this choice!
Ooh so hard to choose but I’m going to go with Lisa Heidke! Her characters crack me up ;0
I haven’t had the chance to read one yet – but it is now on the TBR list.
You won’t regret it!
It’s very hard to choose – but I think perhaps Peter Carey is my favourite Australian author.
Debbie, I have to admit I have only ever read one Peter Carey book – no, not Oscar and Lucinda – which was My Life as a Fake. It was interesting enough but failed to grab me completely. Can you recommend one that you absolutely love?
I have a couple of Peter Careys on my shelf unread – this makes me want to get to them.
I love Ruth Park, read her books at school and still love them!
Kim, if I had to list the top 5 selling Australian authors in my shop, Ruth Park would definitely be on that list!!

That is such an impossible question to answer – I have so many favourites!
My favourite author is Isobelle Carmody – I’ve been reading her the longest and her books have had me captivated as a young teen and now as an adult.
Couldn’t agree more. While I have liked everything she has done, the Obernewtyn chronicles have always been a decided favourite!
That is an incredibly hard question to answer, but I love Helene Young’s work. I’ve read all 3 of hers and am anxiously awaiting the next one:) Have a great Aust Day weekend:)
Thanks for dropping by, Brenda. I haven’t had the opportunity yet to read Helene’s work but after being a part of this blog hop, there is a growing list of TBR’s!!
I havent read many Aussie authors but the work of Christopher Kremmer impressed me very much.
Mystica, I read The Carpet Wars a few years ago and was very surprised. Thank you for adding a touch on non-fiction to the debate!
Rachael Johns is up there with the best!
Margaret, I haven’t read Rachael’s books but I did see her books on offer somewhere so I may have to go and have a look 😉
I would love to be considered for this giveaway. My favourite author would have to be Isobelle Carmody. I got to meet her in 2011, which was so great!
Your response was guaranteed entry for the giveaway. Thank you for popping in for a look. And I agree about Isobelle Carmody – a fabulous talent!
its really hard to pick one favourtie australian author but i think the one i have liked the longest would be Ruth Park, I read the Harp in the South Trilogy every year at school
Thank you for dropping by and entering the giveaway, Bec. Ruth Park is very popular at my store and I know what you mean about The Harp in the South…
I am also finding this really hard – love Kate Morton, Caroline Overington and Craig Silvey. Do I have to pick one? Caroline Overington has a real knack for digging deep into social issues.
Monique, I read ‘I Came to Say Goodbye’ a few months ago and was very impressed. I have a few others on the pile to be read.
Not sure I could really single out one author but if I did I think it would have to be Bryce Courtney. Such a sad loss to the world
Raelene, one of this country’s most successful authors. Would be on anyone’s list of favourite Australian authors.
I love Helene Young’s work. I’ve read all 3 of hers and am waiting anxiously for the next great story.
Jeanette, I haven’t had the chance to read Helene’s work, but I am sure to track them down!
Um favourite author i have a few so in spirit author day , I will choice one of my favourite Australian authors. Alissa Callen is new favourite , just discovered her recently
Another new name for me to look for – thanks for sharing this with us!
Thanks, Readers Heaven, for a chance to win a great book and celebrate Australia Day with you. My favorite author? Ever? I’ll keep it Australian… Morris West. All the best, Joe Jeney
Joe, I have many good memories of reading Morris West. What a great choice!
Favourite Aussie author – so tough to pick just one. I am partial to Belinda Alexandra, Sarah Mayberry, Kelly Hunter, Kate Morton. I could just go on and on and on!
Marg, Belinda Alexander I really like – almost Australia’s Paullina Simons and I absolutely adore Kate Morton. Great choices here!
Hi and thanks for the book giveaway. My favourite author ….hmmmm……there are so many. Just a couple I like are Harper Lee and Janet Evanovich. Aussie authors Joan Lindsay and Kate Morton is now on my likers list after recently reading ‘The Secret Keeper’. Happy Australia day
Ann-Marie, Kate Morton has been very popular (no surprise she was number one in Booktopia’s recent ‘Best Asutralian Author’ survey). Joan Lindsay also wrote one of the most enthralling Australian novels I have ever read. Thanks for your addition!
An impossible question to answer! Has anyone mentioned Bronwyn Parry for romantic suspense? Dead Heat was fantastic.
Jenny, I own a bookstore and I know a few of my customers would agree with you wholeheartedly!
I love Brian Caswell’s work, though he seems to be writing less recently – a pity! The other author I read a lot of is Kerry Greenwood – her Corinna Chapman books are my comfort reading when I’m tired or sick. No real effort to read, and her picture of Melbourne makes me smile.
I will have to admit that I haven’t read Brian Caswell – I can see the shocked look on your face right now 🙂 Kerry Greenwood, on the other hand, I have read quite a lot. Thanks for the new author to check out!
I work with children so I must put Mem Fox into the ring. Her picture books are just splendid. Definitely a great favourite.
I am so glad that someone mentioned Mem Fox – I remember my son reading them in his early years at school and what a delight they were!
I absoutely love Maureen McCarthy’s books. I think he novel “When You Wake and Find Me Gone” is the novel that really started off my obession and love affair with reading. Its the first book that comes to mind each and everytime someone asks me what books I love 🙂
A few months back, someone recommended ‘Somebody’s Crying’ to me and I am glad they did. Her characters are very real and the plot was fantastic!
Thanks so much for the giveaway, this looks really good! My fave Aussie author is definitely Kate Morton, but I also really love Karen Marie Moning, Richelle Mead and Kelley Armstrong.

Another vote for Kate Morton…she is becoming quite the favourite with everybody here. PS – I also like Kelley Armstrong, just don’t tell anyone 😉
Oh dear, I was thinking Kate Morton too…I do love Nick Earls as an Aussie male author, Bachelor Kisses has made me laugh many, many times.
Thanks for hosting a giveaway!
Nice choice with Nick Earls – he has a furious sense of humour and a great eye for storytelling. Thank you for your addition to the list.
Favourite Liz Byrski but loved the last Kate Morton too.
Liz Byrski is slowly becoming a popular choice in my bookstore as more people become aware of her talent.
One of my favorite author is Kristin Hannah. Di Morrissey is my favorite Australian authors. Thank you so much for the wonderful giveaway.
I am surprised Di Morrissey took so long to make our collection. She writes a great story and does some wonderful research for her novels.
Anna Campbell 🙂
Mariska, Anna Campbell is a welcome addition to our collection. Regency romance novels are hugely popular where I work and I am pleased to see one of the best authors get mentioned.
I like Jane Austen’s books. Haven’t read any Australian authors yet.
Thanks for the giveaway.

While you may not have read any Australian authors, I hope this blog has helped you find a few worth trying! Thanks for coming by and entering.
My fav. Aussie author has changed over time. Currently, I’m a big fan of Craig Silvey.
Oh, Jasper Jones was such an awesome book – I had forgotten about that. Fantastic choice!
Thank you very much! I`m in love with this giveaway! 🙂 I`m from Europe and I`m non-native English speaker; there is not a very big choice of books in English here (except online shops) and they`re usually from American and British writers so this is a very beautiful opportunity to get to know the Australian writers 🙂
I recently won a book Shine Light by Marianne de Pierres who is also an Australian writer but haven`t read it yet since it is the 3rd book in the series!
Thanks!
dita(dot)skarste(at)gmail(dot)com

Thank you for calling in and adding your favourite to the list of Australian Authors. Kate Morton is proving very popular.
Although sometimes classifed as British Australian, May Gibbs’ gumnut characters are typically Australian.
May Gibbs will always be considered be the Queen of Australian children’s literature. Thanks for stopping in and participating.

Hard to pick just one. Love Geraldine Brooks,Liz Byrski, and loved ML Stedman The Light between Oceans plus Unforgivable the latest from Sharon Robards. Have to say to date I have not read any of Kate Grenville.
Dale, you have commented on last year’s post. Here is a link to this year’s…
One favourite author! What a terrible question. Since it’s Australia Day: Peter Carey, Ruth Park, Margo Lanagan, Ursula Dubosarsky – that’s as close as I can get to one!
