Halloween 2013

IMG_1693 cropHalloween was a huge success. There was no moving on the footpath as the people filled the street in droves. The kids were fantastically dressed as they filed into the shops.

“Trick or Treat,” they said. “Thank you,” they said. “You are welcome,” we said – and we meant it. It was an absolute pleasure to see the smiles on the children’s faces when they collected their “treat” during the afternoon and well into the evening.

If any of the shop keepers were like us, then they ran out of lollies before 6pm, when the event was scheduled to start. In reality, the kids began showing up on the Main Street shortly before 4pm. We rushed out to refill our candy dish and within minutes were talking about a second run.

After three huge lots of lollies disappeared with happy Trick or Treaters, we decided to shut our doors and experience all of the wonderful displays happening on Main Street. Nearly next door, there was a brilliant light show on John Joseph building. We wondered up to see the scarecrows in Pioneer Park, where a few got into the spirit by pretending to be one of the statues then jumping to life to scare and delighted onlookers.  Nearly every shop had done up their windows with elaborate decorations, and a few had dedicated individuals in costume startling passers-by.

The man at the center of it all was Council’s Economical Development Officer, Matthew Brewster. Matt has worked tirelessly for months but he never showed the stain of he must have been feeling. So many times over the last few weeks especially, Matt has been into the shop asking for feedback and taking suggestions. Even today, when he must have been exhausted, Matt came in to ask us how we thought the event went off and already talking about how we can make it bigger and better next year. We have nothing but good things to say. Well done, Matt!

We couldn’t be more thrilled with the turn out. How brilliant that we can come together as a community and have some kids-safe, family fun. Great work everyone! That was fantastic. Yes, please, can we have some more of that?
