Spend the night with your perfect valentine. Sit down to a romantic dinner after a luxurious candle-lit bath and then slip between satin sheets with your ideal companion. Did I mention that your companion for this ideal evening is a book? Books are way than men are.
Here are 14 reasons why your valentine should be a book this year.
- A romance with a book never goes wrong
Not all first meetings go well, and not all romances end happily every after. But a date with a book will never be a waste of time.“There is no mistaking a real book when one meets it. It is like falling in love.”
― Christopher Morley, Pipefuls - A book will keep you company
A book will never work late or keep you waiting when he’s meant to meet you. However, when others keep you waiting, a book will wait with you, making the time fly by.“I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! — When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.”
― Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice -
A book won’t make excuses
A book never has to say he’s sorry, because you can count on a book to do what he says and never make excuses for bad behavior. If a book behaves badly, it’s always for your amusement and delight.
- A book will never rush you out of the bath
While a book is never late, it’s also always patient. Take as long as you like getting ready. Enjoy that decadent bubble bath. A book will never bang on the door and yell, “Are you finished yet?” In fact, a book will happily join you and extend the lavish soak by entertaining you.”There’s no trouble in this world so serious that it can’t be cured with a hot bath, a glass of whiskey, and the Book of Common Prayer.”
― Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat, Pray, Love
- There’s nothing a book likes better than pajama day
Leave your hair un-brushed and your face unwashed. There is nothing a book likes better than a pajama day. A book will never make you feel guilty if you spend the whole day in bed but happily join you.
- A book will never tell you what to think
…or what to say, or what to wear. A book will simply give you the facts and let you come to your own conclusions. A book isn’t interested in forcing you to change, which is precisely why it changes you.“I love books, by the way, way more than movies. Movies tell you what to think. A good book lets you choose a few thoughts for yourself.”― Karen Marie Moning, Darkfever - A book won’t cheat on you
While a book will happily join you and your girlfriends for a chat, it will never betray you. You’ll never find out that your book prefers your girlfriend over you. A book is loyal to the end, and while you may share your book, you’ll never find out that your book prefers your friend.
- A book will never hold back, but tell you all the things you need to know
A book will never tell you “Nothing” when you want to know what he’s thinking or feeling. A book will open up to you and reveal everything you want to know. He will never hold anything back. A book is basically one long beautiful love letter written especially to make you smile.“All those words, he thought, all that information; it was like pouring water into sand. It all went in, through the eyes into the brain, and none of it ever came out again.”
― K J Parker, Gignomai in The Hammer
- The sex is always perfect
Unlike in life, the sex scenes in a book are always hot and steamy. No one ever gets it wrong or is embarrassed, well, at least no one ever embarrasses you. Like this steamy scene in Atonement.”They were beyond the present, outside time, with no memories and no future. There was nothing but obliterating sensation, thrilling and swelling, and the sound of fabric on fabric and skin on fabric as their limbs slid across each other in this restless, sensuous wrestling. …”
– Ian McEwan, Atonement
- A book will always cuddle in the after-glow.
Your book will join you under the covers. There is nothing a book likes better than to curl up with you under a blanket and a book will never let go until you want him too. - A book is more than a lover
A book is a friend, a confident, a comforter. A book will spur you on and inspire you or give you a place to hide when the world gets too hard. A book can be different things on different days, but he is always exactly what you need.“You are my best friend as well as my lover, and I do not know which side of you I enjoy the most. I treasure each side, just as I have treasured our life together.”
― Nicholas Sparks, The Notebook
- A book doesn’t eat your chocolate
…or drink your wine, or take the last piece of cake. You can eat whatever you like in front of a book and you never have to share. A book is always full.“Isn’t it odd how much fatter a book gets when you’ve read it several times?” Mo had said…”As if something were left between the pages every time you read it. Feelings, thoughts, sounds, smells…”
― Cornelia Funke, Inkspell
- A book always accepts you “just as you are”
A book doesn’t worry if you’ve put on weight, or you’re having a bad hair day, or even if you haven’t brushed your teeth. You never have to feel self-conscience or embarrassed.”Just as you are? Not thinner? Not cleverer? Not with slightly bigger breasts or slightly smaller nose?”
― Helen Fielding, The Edge of Reason
- A book is always there for you
No matter what’s going on, a book will be there for you. You can always count on a book. He will make himself available at any hour of the day or night, just what you need when you need it. A book will never be too busy for you.“It was books that made me feel that perhaps I was not completely alone. They could be honest with me, and I with them.”
― Cassandra Clare, Clockwork Prince
Don’t have a date for Valentines, pick up a blind date book for $2, $3, or $4. And watch out for a special sale on Friday, February 14.

Just to politely disagree, I would like to say, that books have let me down. They have killed my darlings, or gone for plots that I didn’t like, and I threw them out the door, or across the room.
Perhaps, but it was just a bit of fun. This time of year can be miserable if you don’t have someone. Sometimes a bit of irreverent fun is called for.
Absolutely. I’ve had far fewer books let me down.
