If you haven’t heard of the ASL Ice Bucket Challenge yet, please let us share this current trend to help people. The challenged person is filmed being doused with a bucket of ice water and donates $100 to ASL research. They then challenge someone else to take the Ice Bucket Challenge.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS is a neurodegenerative disease you may know as Lou Gehrig’s disease. It causes muscle spasms and atrophy; as well as difficulty speaking, swallowing, and breathing.
We first heard about the ASL Ice Bucket Challenge when author Stephen King was challenged. He challenged John Grisham. We then heard about it again when Amanda Palmer, Neil Gaiman‘s wife, took the challenge and challenged her husband. And today he took her challenge.
When Palmer spoke of her brother who died of ALS, it brought tears to my eyes and made this funny thing where people had buckets of ice dropped on their heads into something powerful.
Authors usually let their words do their talking, but suddenly these authors are letting their actions speak. We often see actors making huge gestures, it’s nice to see authors getting involved beyond the page.
We are so proud to be part of a community that cares. We hope to see this trend continue, and we hope you will join in. Please give to the ASL Therapy Development Institute.
