Good morning all, welcome to Week 6 of our 2016 Reading Challenge. We have definitely covered some interesting genres so far and this week is no exception: to read a book based on a fairy tale.
For me, this was actually a rather difficult challenge. We have a lot of books in the shop but, for the life of me, I could not find one based on a fairy tale. Sure, I could find books based on other books (Wicked by Gregory Maguire or Alice in Zombieland by Gena Showalter are two examples) but they really don’t fit the challenge quite right.
Then, I stumbled across this book that was exactly what I was after…
Cinder by Marissa Meyer
Humans and androids crowd the raucous streets of New Beijing. A deadly plague ravages the population. From space, a ruthless lunar people watch, waiting to make their move. No one knows that Earth’s fate hinges on one girl.
Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She’s a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai’s, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle, and a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world’s future.
So, for those who didn’t pick it up – this is a cyborg/sci-fi re-telling of Cinderella. Does that not sound like a pretty awesome story? Give me a week and I will let you know!!
